Here are The New Republic’s best art books of the year.
I wouldn’t mind picking this one up; I’ve been at times oddly fascinated by the Marchesa Casati. Though I suppose she was just the Lady Gaga of her day, minus the talent plus the fabulous wealth.

Lady Gaga does what she does and acts outrageous to sell her own records, baby. Casati lived her art 24/7 in a time when any woman who even so much as wore make-up was almost strung up. Doubt very much that more than fifty years after she’s dead that Gaga will be inspiring future fashion designers of the caliber of Galliano and Lagerfeld. Or have such a great book published about her portraits, her icon status, or her place in history as a muse.

It was Casati who paved the way for outre women like Lady Gaga, Madonna, Cher, Annie Lennox and even designers like Vivienne Westwood and Anna Piagi, and Casati still shines the brighest! A true original!

You’re both right..and I suppose there is a special talent in being original, which she cornered the market on. That’s we continue to be fascinated with her so many years later. And I had no idea she was an influence on Vivienne Westwood! If I were made of money, I’d own everything she’s designed.
