Reading While Moving

The folks over at The Millions have got some suggestions on what to read while traveling. They’re also asking for reader suggestions, so post yours in the comments or via Twitter using the hashtag #roadbooks.

I spend a lot of time on Amtrak and I have to agree with Sonya that the Russians are the way to go with trains. I read most of There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor’s Baby on a trip to New York, and the stark hopelessness and gritty poverty in many of the stories fit perfectly with the bleak New Jersey wasteland outside my window. For my day to day Metro or bus commute, I like to read short stories. I read Kelly Link’s Magic for Beginners story by story over a couple of weeks that way.

What about you? What do you like to read while on the go?

  1. I’m not a commuter, but I do take the occasional road trip with the family. Usually I take along whatever is piled on my bedside table at the time. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not. What works best for me are novels that are more or less a simple read, not too deep. Without a doubt I’ll be interrupted a million times. Even with earplugs it’s difficult to concentrate in a car filled with people.

Glad I found your blog. I’ll be poking around for a while.

    • Definitely with you on the simple read. Too many distractions and I find myself totally unable to remember what I just read! And thanks for the kind words.
